KEEPING THE BALL ROLLING

Football mania has finally arrived at BIM with Freekick, the annual football tournament. And what a way to kick-start things!!! thunder, lightning and the summer showers announced their arrival in grand style. The rain though, did not hamper the morale of our students. The spirit of our students was evident from the efforts they put in to drain the pitch and get it ready for play (albeit with a delay of nearly 3 hours) post the rain. Special kudos to the volunteers and Sportscomm members for their tireless efforts in organising the event amidst all odds. As the saying goes in BIM, Cometh the hour, Cometh the ‘Comm’.

The event had 10 teams participating with a healthy mix of students from both PGP-I and PGP II. The event was inaugurated by the ladies’ hostel warden and featured the quintessential cake cutting ceremony.

The first match of the tournament had last year’s runners-up Galacticos pitted against the newbies, Royal stags. The first match in itself was testimony to the toil and hard work the teams have put in for the event; right from getting their jerseys right to the sportsman spirit exhibited both on and off the field.

The event scheduled till the 14th of August has thrown some surprise winners, some exalted moments, some nail biting finishes… but, in the midst of it all lies the true purpose of Freekick… team building, camaraderie and a sense of mutual respect for each other. The Galacticos from Group B have proceeded to the semi-finals with three wins in a row. The odds are equally divided among the teams of Group A. In a few moments from now, the league stage will be over and a clearer picture would emerge on who the final four would be.

FREETHROW

The league stage of the throwball competition for girls, Freethrow, was held yesterday. Four teams, two each from PGP 1 and 2. In the first game the two PGP2 teams, Mangathas and What The played each other with the former proceeding to the finals in two straight sets. In the second game, the two PGP1 teams, G-Power and Daring Divas, were engrossed in an intense battle with G-Power coming from behind to seize a point in the first set, closely tail the DDs in the second and smoothly finish things off in the third. Mangathas and G-Power face off in the finals to be held tomorrow.

So how is the mood among the first years about the first sports tournament of this year?

“Freekick gives us a chance to freak out amidst our tight schedules. It helps us learn team work and not just football” says Abinesh of Team Hunto.

Balu from Team Appatuckers expresses, “Its a chance for people who dont know football to also be a part of the fun”.

A CRICKET FEST TO REMEMBER

WICKETS’11 the annual cricketing tournament came to an end late last night. MARINES, the PGP2 team, lifted the trophy in the end after a nail-biting final that went down to the wire.

The MARINES

The MARINES with the trophy

Put into bat first, GALACTICOS, the PGP1 team, posted 108 in their 15 overs. Opener Kaarthik displayed his consistency yet again by scoring a 25. However it was wicketkeeper Shakthikamal who vented his aggressive might at the Marines bowlers and thanks to his efforts, his team crossed the 100 run mark.

The Marines began on an equally strong note with opener Prabhuchander scoring two boundaries in the first over off Kaarthik. However he departed soon after and in came Giridaran who put on a 50 partnership with Suraj, the other opener. With the score at 64/1 in 7 overs, the Marines appeared all set to cruise home with the trophy. But that was not to be.

The Galacticos bowlers came back strongly and struck with wickets in quick succession. The celebrations touched a peak when Rajaram, the star batsman of the Marines, was dismissed for a duck. Batsman after batsman departed and with 6 wickets down, captain Bharathram got off the mark straight away with two sixes before holing out to long-on. After Abhinav Apte found Natesh at point, it was left to Rajagopal and Manikandan to score 20 runs off 2 overs. Both held their nerve till the equation became 5 off 2 balls when Manikandan timed a full-toss over covers for a four. It all came down to 1 run, 1 ball, 1 wicket. The Galacticos fielders were all brought inside the circle yet Manikandan managed to find an empty backward square leg region and seal the victory for the Marines.

The Galacticos

The GALACTICOS - so near yet so far

The Marines proved that they were the strongest team around. They proved that the loss to Velociraptors in the league stage was just an aberration and came back strongly at a crucial time in the semi-final where the defeated the Sizzlers. In the final, they just went a step ahead.

The Galacticos showed their might yet again when they reached the final which is their third entry in as many sporting tournaments in BIM. By taking the match to the last ball, they showed they are a force to reckon with.

The finalists

Plenty of rewards were given away. The following is the list :

Looking back it was a tournament with every match played in the true spirit of the game and the real winner is cricket itself. With the involvement of other committees like BISMARC and FINCLUB for the first time, Sportscomm27 would reflect on a trend-setting sporting event organised in a grand and professional manner.

WICKETS’11 – THE STAGE IS SET

WICKETS’11, the annual cricket tournament was inaugurated by the Director, Shri N. Bala Baskar, earlier today. He was all praise for SPORTSCOMM, BISMARC and FINCLUB, the three committees that came together for the first time in the history of BIM to conduct not just a simple cricket tournament but one with various exciting off-field events. He expressed that the integrated approach will prove to be a good learning experience for the committees involved.

Shri N.Bala Baskar, Director, inaugurating the tournament

The inauguration was followed by the unveiling of the team logos, videos and jerseys outside the mess. One member from each team walked around the arena, flaunting his jersey after which his team’s video was played and the other team members were called up to pose for photographs.

The Marines

WICKETS’11 will have 10 teams split into two pools. The top two teams from each pool will proceed to the semi-finals from where two will move into the finals.

The teams in Pool A are – Sizzlers, Galacticos, Mighty Lions, Nakamukka Tigers (all PGP1) and 3rd Quadrant (mix of PGP1 and 2).

The teams in Pool B are – Velociraptors, Marines, Arcanes, Den Warriors (all PGP2) and Zeroes (mix of PGP1 and 2).

All league matches will be played for 12 overs per side while the semis and finals will be for 15 per side. A minimum of four bowlers can be used with a cap of 3 overs per bowler. The matches are set to commence tomorrow night with the Marines taking on Arcanes in the opening encounter.

BISMARC will evaluate teams for their marketing activities. Each team has appointed a “brand manager” to take care of the promotional efforts for its side. Cash prizes in store for the best posters, videos and jersey designs.

Events by BISMARC and FINCLUB

FINCLUB, on the other hand, has attempted to replicate the predictor and super selector contests that are typical of international cricket tournaments. “BIM Vegas” is the predictor game in which contestants have to predict the winner of a particular match by voting for it. Voting will close 45 minutes before the start of the game. Till then, participants are free to change their votes any number of times.”Warrior Bazzar” is the super selector game in which contestants have to select 11 players from the six teams that would be playing on a particular day. They will be awarded 1 point for every run, 10 points for a wicket, 3 for a catch and 2 for a runout/stumping which their selected players effect. Both events are designed to test the decision making skills of the contestants.

All that remains now is the first toss tomorrow which will set the ball rolling (pun intended) for 10 days of cricketing action.

AN END TO A SPORTING WEEK

SPIKES’10 came to an end yesterday with the Galacticos walking away with the trophy after defeating the Trojans 3-2. The road to the finals was a rough one for both teams as they overcame the Arcanes and the Shaolin Spikes, two of the strongest teams, in the semi-finals. VOLLEYS ALL THE WAY

Spikes’10 the annual volleyball tournament is underway with the league stages done with and the second stage, the Super Six, in progress.

The action began on the night of Sunday the 5th with the Shaolin Spikes, the PGP2 team that called itself Catalans in the football tournament earlier this year, taking on Sheila ki Jawaans, the PGP1 team who were formerly known as the 57 Nakka Mukkas. After three days of league games, six teams – Galacticos, Shaolin Spikes, Arcanes, Renegades, Trojans and Appatakkars.

The first day of the super six matches was last night. The Shaolin Spikes faced the Renegades in the first encounter, defeating them comprehensively in two straight sets. This was followed by a nail-biting encounter between the Trojans and the Arcanes, a match that went down to the wire. The Arcanes emerged the winners in the end following many tense moments that included the two teams tied on 24-24 in the third set. The last game of the night was between the Galacticos and the Renegades and the former continued to prove its might in the tournament.

While teams like the Galacticos, Arcanes and Velociraptors retained the same names they had used in the football tournament, most others went for a change of name. The choice of names was reflective of the character of the teams. There was Oram Po, which meant “Don’t come in my way” probably signifying that their march to the winners’ title would be unobstructed. Then there was Sheila Ki Jawaans, a name inspired by a recent Bollywood item number, signifying that they were playing to chill out and have fun.

IN TRUE SPIRIT OF SPORT

FREEKICK’10 the annual football tournament and the first of the annual sporting events at BIM, came to an end late last night with Team Catalans lifting the Rajrup Memorial Trophy in style. Team Galacticos emerged the runners-up in an intensely fought contest that saw both teams defending their way to a no-goaler even with the provision of a 20-minute extra time. Ultimately the result had to be decided by means of the penalty shootout which the Catalans won 3-1.

Catalans with the cup of glory

The Galacticos and the Catalans were both unbeaten in the tournament, in the run-up to the final day. Ten goals for and only one against them in the league stage suggests a lot about the might of the Galacticos while the Catalans, with not many goals in their name, endured a few close contests to emerge at the top. The final was thus the ultimate test for both the teams. Rajagopal, goalkeeper of the Catalans, bent his back probably an inch more than what Prem Karthik, his Galacticos counterpart, could manage and thus helped his team overcome the Galacticos in the penalty shootout in a display of true, spirited sporting action.

Galacticos- Spirited all the way!

Director Shri. Bala Baskar was among those who had gathered to watch the action. He officially inaugurated the Sumatra Memorial Throwball Trophy for the girls. The Regalls of PGP 2 and the Powerpuff Girls of PGP 1 took on each other in this match which was conducted over three sets. While the Regalls gave themselves a good start by claiming the first set, a number of missed catches saw them conceding the lead in the next two sets, and thereby the trophy, to the Powerpuff Girls.

Powerpuff Girls--Girl Power

Kicking off the night was the Tyrantz taking on the Arcanes and prevailing over them in the third place playoff match.

Tyrantz - Living to fight another day!

Sivabalan of Sportscomm 27 reflects, “The atmosphere was very positive throughout. Weather did mess up things but it was beyond our control. The way the final four teams played the semis in potentially dangerous conditions is testimony to the very nature of sport that is to transcend barriers and to take risks for in the end you are a champion irrespective of whether you win or lose”. Bharath Kumar, another Sportscomm 27 member, expressed that some members from other committees lent a helping hand in the organization of the tournament. “We would have been at a loss had it not been for these people. By voluntarily taking up responsibility where needed, they showed they are keen to make a difference and be counted. We hope to receive more such support for our further sporting events”.

The occasion also saw the announcement of the new members of the BIM Students Council (STC) for the 27th batch. The trend of having six members in the council was broken this time when two more were added. The eight who finally made it are – Priyaranjan Nayak, Abhinav Singh, Vijayakumar G and Sangeetha K.S from Section A and Mani Shanthavel, Madhav Kiran, Joy Malakar and Praveena K.S from Section B.

Next on the cards is the volleyball tournament in the next trimester but Sportscomm has promised a few surprises as well. For now it will be wait and watch.
